What I have learned managing a Church Bookstore

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Other | 3 Comments

Do you work for a publishing company? Are you an author? Do you want to write a book? After managing a Church (Christian) Bookstore for the last three years and spending nearly five previous years working for a best-selling Christian author I have come to learn a few things about retailing books and the Christian publishing industry. Here are four things I have come to learn in the past few years about books & retail:

  1. Too many titles are absolute crap. One of my 10 searches on Twitter is “Christian Bookstore“. Time and again when I check the feed it is filled with people who say things like “I found this in a Christian Bookstore . . .” and then they will have some TwitPic of a terrible title, Hollywood “Christian” knock off or even worse, some book on metaphysics or the healing properties of meatloaf. Okay I am only kidding about the meatloaf, but the point is that publishing companies are publishing too many worthless books. Taking a chance on a new author can be exciting but 9 times out of 10 it results in too many books competing for a shrinking market. CEO of Thomas Nelson, Michael Hyatt also writes that publishers need to stop releasing as many books. My advice to publishers: stop publishing crap.
  2. People don’t care who you are, they care what you have been through and how you can help them. Our church has been labeled as “seeker sensitive” meaning that we attract a lot of new believing Christians. As a result of the type of people who attend our church, most of the customers that come through our store have no idea about who the “who’s who” of Christian authors are. Honestly, most of them don’t care. I am totally guessing here, but I am estimating that 70% of our customers have no idea who Rick Warren, Donald Miller, Francis Chan, Swindoll, Stanley, Lucado or who any of the best sellers are. The people who come through our store are looking for books and resources that will help them with their journey. If you have a story, there is someone out there that needs your story to help them with theirs. My advice to authors: share your story, even if you aren’t “Christian famous” someone out there needs your story.
  3. I don’t sell books, people sell books. My Twitter profile says: “I am a linchpin who wants to helps connect people with resources that will change their lives.” That is truly my heart and my passion. I want people to experience the life change that I have. No matter how sincere my heart is to connect people to resources that will change their lives I really get the opportunity to do it on a limited basis. The majority of the books we sell are because of the personal relationships between people. One person tries a book, loves it and recommends it to ten friends. Six of those friends buy the book and recommend it to ten more each. Before you know it we have sold cases and cases of books. I couldn’t have done that on my own, it is the relationships of the Central Christian Church family that sells books. My advice to those of you looking to write a book: despite all the changes in technology, blogging, and E-readers, books still sell because of personal relationships. Build your sales on the foundation of relationships with your readers.
  4. The Bible is still the all time best selling book. A few months ago I asked one of my employees what she loved the most about her job. She didn’t have to think for a second before she responded, “I love helping people find their first Bible.” Amazing. The Bible is the all-time most selling book in the history of the world. Think about that. At Central that still rings true. We sell more Bibles that we do any other book, more than our Pastors books, more than any guest speaker and more than any CD. I saw a post the other day that Christian Bookstores were an oxymoron and that the only thing they should carry is the Bible. Well I am happy to respond that the Bible is the anchor for our store as it should be.

Are you an author? Publisher? Bookstore manager or worker? Thoughts? Agree? Disagree? Have anything to add to the list?

AHA! – Free Conference

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Personal, Spiritual | Leave a comment

A few weeks ago I opened up a discussion about conferences and seminars that cost money but are being broadcast online for free. I wholeheartedly agree with my friend Kyle Reed that an online conference can not replace in person community that is created in the hallways of a conference. I however see the tremendous upside to saving myself and my ministry money. So if I am given the choice I will choose the free one every time.

Because I love free stuff and I want to grow in my leadership I am really excited for Wednesday. Provided by the Leadership Network and a few others, there will be a free online only conference that features 40 leaders from around the country. What I love about this conference besides the fact that it is free, is the fact that it is a mix of people you know and people you have never heard of:

I love that Leadership Network is pulling from new faces rather than the same old crowd of leaders. I am excited to see what unfolds on Wednesday. An unfamiliar face to most of you, but local pastor Devin Hudson is among the 40 speakers as well as a few familiar faces: Carlos Whitaker, Frank Viola, Will Mancini, and Shane Hipps.

REMEMBER THIS EVENT IS FREE! But you have to register! So do it now -> HERE. The conference starts Wednesday 12 Noon EST, 11AM CST and 9AM PST. Tune in, take notes and grow!

Make free worth something in your life and leadership!

Trying Something Different

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Personal | 2 Comments

A few days ago I posted about our trip to Michigan and the fact that it left me wanting to deal with the demons from my past. The post ended rather rhetorical as I was looking for an idea of how to do things differently than the ways I had tried in recent years to deal with my past. I had an idea in my head that has been rattling around for a few months here it is:

“Benji, you need to stop reading books. Stop spending so much time reading about what others have to say about God and his word, and just read the Bible.”

My response to myself was that I read the Bible enough to know what it says and that it wouldn’t help much in this issue in my life. I don’t know if I have ever been so arrogant and wrong in my life. I need all the help I can get. I have to be honest, that is what this blog is all about. I have read all the books of the Bible at one time or another, but I have never read the Bible straight through. After seeing some very positive results in friends and co-workers who have been reading the Zondervan Bible in 90 days, I decided a few days ago that starting September first I would start reading the Bible, 12 pages a day until it was finished.

All of this was solidified in my mind before the weekend. Then on Sunday when my wife came into the bookstore and told me that she was PREGNANT I knew I needed to get busy allowing God to work on the demons in my heart and life. I am so excited to become a father. It is a joy and honor I have dreamed of for many years, but with the added pressure mounting of being a husband and a father, I am so grateful that I have the next nine months to allow God to sweep into my life and clean out some of my closets.

During the next 90 days I have some expectations but I am trying to forget all the stuff I know about God and the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to lead me through the scriptures so that I might come to know more about God and maybe a little more about myself. I am sure that the tone and shape of this blog will change over the next 90 days and that I might lose a subscriber or two, but for those of you who hang around and lurk these pages I pray that if you have time you will consider picking up a copy of the Bible in 90 days and take this journey with me, a journey I should have taken a long time ago. Oh well, it is never to late to try something different.
