When was the last time you turned it off?

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Honesty | 1 Comment

When was the last time you turned it all off?

A few days ago I was having an issue with an app on my smart phone. I had to restart my phone to get the application working again. In the process of restarting my phone. I flippantly said, “I don’t think I have turned my phone off since we flew to Michigan.” Shh! Don’t tell the FAA but I think I didn’t even turn it off on the flight. Flight mode: yes but off: no. So when was the last time I turned my phone off? I couldn’t tell you.

How many times a day to you check your Facebook account? or Twitter feed? or Blog Reader?

Confession time: a hundred or more.

Between my phone and my computer I bet I check those three things a hundred times a day! Sad? yes. Honest? yes. I have been extremely convicted lately that my phone has become a crutch in my life. I clutch to it in uncomfortable situations, I play with it when I am bored and I rely on it for everything in between. My phone is very quickly becoming an idol in my life. I am having a hard time figuring out a plan to escape from this narcissism and self-indulgence. But something has to change: my phone needs to be turned off.

But when and how?

Any of you fast from your cell phone? Do any of you turn your phone of daily? or for certain periods of the day?

Social Networking Answers

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Other | Leave a comment

Yesterday I posted 5 questions I was hoping to get some feedback on. Most of the feedback I received was with interactions with people I know here in Vegas, but as promised I thought I would share some of my own thoughts about social networking:

What do you love about social networking?

  • I think what I love the most about social networking besides all the great points that everyone has mentioned thus far, is the idea that anyone can connect with anyone. Very busy and very influential people whom I would never had access too in the past have all sent me messages at one point or another when I had contacted them about something. Social networking makes a huge world a very small 6 degrees of separation. The second thing I love about social networking is that it allows life to continue in real time. When I head back to Michigan to see my family or friends I don’t have to spend hours “catching up” but our friendships can continue as is. We can go out and make new memories and share new experiences rather than spend all our time catching up on things that we missed out on. There is no lag time between visits. My friends have been following my tweets, my Facebook or my blog and they know what I am up to and vice-versa.

What drives you crazy about social networking?

  • Maybe it is just me but one thing that drives me crazy about social networking is the fact that because it allows people to stay connected in real time it leaves a lot of room for feeling left out. When particular friends hang out, post pictures or a department goes bowling, etc and you are not invited, you feel left out. The online real time of social networking can create a disconnect with actual relationships.

What are some of the biggest mistakes you’ve seen people make – specific anonymous examples.

  • I think I made the biggest mistake of my life when I first started Down Write Honest. I had been blogging on Xanga/Myspace/Blogspot/Wordpress.com for nearly 5 years when I started DWH, but to be honest I wasn’t a “power blogger” who knew what to do or what not to do. I was young man who was hurting. 3 days into DWH I posted a blog that received almost 10,000 hits in four hours (post has long been removed). It lead to meetings with my leadership team and I almost lost my job here at Central. I blogged my garbage to the world. Some of you read it, some of you didn’t but it was a mess for others to oversee and for me to clean-up. Being on staff at a church does not put me on a pedestal, but it does mean that there is a watchful eye on me. I learned a lot from that post and the aftermath, but the most important thing I can say to a church staff person who interacts in social networks and blogs is to think about your audience as write. Your audience is one that looks up to you even when you don’t think so and there is someone always watching to see what you are doing or saying. I found this out the hard way.

What advice do you have for people who are new to social networking?

  • Here is what I say to people who are starting Facebook/Twitter/Linkedin/Blogging -> Add value to people’s lives. Social networking can seem like a rat race of information that is constantly progressing. In that progression there are ultimately two types of people, those that take from others and those that add value to the lives of others. Do you want to be the kind of person who adds value? Or takes it? (And by adding value I don’t mean sending me gifts for my imaginary farm!)

What are good ways to use social networking for your church/business/ministry?

  • Social networks can be leveraged towards amazing connections, especially for a church. It is hard not to use these things for marketing if you are business, but as a church/ministry you are more of an embodiment of the person of Jesus so being “social” shouldn’t be too hard, after all Jesus spent most of his years in ministry interacting with people, not marketing to them.

Do you have any more thoughts about social networking? Any thing stand out to you that you would disagree with?

Church Media Design 2.0

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Other | 2 Comments

For just over 2 years a phenomenal free resource has been developing out of Grand Haven Michigan. Brad Zimmerman (yes, my younger and taller brother) with the editing and filming help of Adam Foster have been producing a hilarious weekly podcast with tips, tricks and how-to’s of how to do all things technical. Want to know how to use After Effects? How about broadcasting a video from YouTube during a service or seminar? Need tips on Photoshop? These things explained and so much more! This podcast is a highly valuable resource for anyone and everyone! The target audience is for people who work in smaller churches looking for help with things related to media, graphics, video, website, etc. However as I have watched dozens of episodes I have found that there are tips in almost every episode that help me with managing a bookstore and a personal website.

I am excited to announce that CMDTV has taken the last 2 months off and is ready to launch a much more user friendly and comprehensive website built on WordPress. I got a sneak peek yesterday and what you will find is that the free resources are going to be easier to find and the old episodes easier to navigate. I am so excited to see how this free resource can help people, churches and para-church ministries grow in their ability to produce creative videos, graphics, and content.

I know I am a little biased because it is my brother, but I highly recommend that you stop by and check out Church Media Design in the next few days, you are going to love the new site!

Trying Something Different

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Personal | 2 Comments

A few days ago I posted about our trip to Michigan and the fact that it left me wanting to deal with the demons from my past. The post ended rather rhetorical as I was looking for an idea of how to do things differently than the ways I had tried in recent years to deal with my past. I had an idea in my head that has been rattling around for a few months here it is:

“Benji, you need to stop reading books. Stop spending so much time reading about what others have to say about God and his word, and just read the Bible.”

My response to myself was that I read the Bible enough to know what it says and that it wouldn’t help much in this issue in my life. I don’t know if I have ever been so arrogant and wrong in my life. I need all the help I can get. I have to be honest, that is what this blog is all about. I have read all the books of the Bible at one time or another, but I have never read the Bible straight through. After seeing some very positive results in friends and co-workers who have been reading the Zondervan Bible in 90 days, I decided a few days ago that starting September first I would start reading the Bible, 12 pages a day until it was finished.

All of this was solidified in my mind before the weekend. Then on Sunday when my wife came into the bookstore and told me that she was PREGNANT I knew I needed to get busy allowing God to work on the demons in my heart and life. I am so excited to become a father. It is a joy and honor I have dreamed of for many years, but with the added pressure mounting of being a husband and a father, I am so grateful that I have the next nine months to allow God to sweep into my life and clean out some of my closets.

During the next 90 days I have some expectations but I am trying to forget all the stuff I know about God and the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to lead me through the scriptures so that I might come to know more about God and maybe a little more about myself. I am sure that the tone and shape of this blog will change over the next 90 days and that I might lose a subscriber or two, but for those of you who hang around and lurk these pages I pray that if you have time you will consider picking up a copy of the Bible in 90 days and take this journey with me, a journey I should have taken a long time ago. Oh well, it is never to late to try something different.

Dealing with the Demons

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Personal | 2 Comments

This past week my wife and I flew to Michigan for my cousins wedding and a little relaxation time with family. It was by far one of the best times I have spent with my family in a long time. We laughed, we cried, we made new memories and we visited old ones. It truly was a great week. However at the end of the trip I was confronted with some of the demons that lurk in my heart and life.

We all have been wounded from time to time, whether it be a broken relationship, a past abuse or some sort of injustice. We all have been hurt in the depths of our souls. Developing through life some (very few of us) learn how to deal with these wounds in a healthy way. Most of us just learn how to mask the pain and anguish these events or people cause on us. I have been masking my pain for years. I have been wearing the mask for so long that I had almost forgotten that I was wearing it.

That all changed when I was in Michigan. I was made fully aware that even though I live thousands of miles away from the memories that hurt me I have been going about life ignoring their presence. Traveling back to the place I grew up generated a knowledge of those hurts, you could almost say that I developed an irregular heartbeat. It was like something deep inside me was stirred awake.

And I don’t like it.

Because the truth of it is that I don’t want to deal with my demons.

At some point in our lives we turn a corner. Our demons go from being our demons, to shifting to our identity. We not only believe the lies, we become the lies. Most of us don’t recognize this shift happening or when it occurs, but I believe it eventually happens to most of us. Being in Michigan snapped me back into reality that I was allowing the demons of my past, although buried deep inside, to control the way that I live my life.

God wants more for my life. And so do I. Time to try something different. But what?

Scratch My Back

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Personal | 1 Comment

After a 10 day hiatus I am back and ready for you to scratch my back.

What?

Last week my wife and I spent a wonderful week in Michigan with my brother, his wife and my mom. It was one of the best weeks I have had back home in a long time. We visited old vacation hot spots, spent time with cousins, ushered at a wedding and even got to surf some of the slop on Lake Michigan. It was a great visit until I got back to Las Vegas.

On Sunday it was a humid 85 degrees on the shores of Lake Michigan. Just about 25 degrees cooler than Las Vegas. I went out in the sun without sunscreen for 5+ hours. For the first time in 7 years I got a sunburn on my back that turned my body a shade of pink that I would not like to think about. The first two days after the burn were fine, that is until I landed back in Las Vegas. & years ago when I burnt my back I burnt it so badly that I damaged the nerve endings in my back. So now when I get a first degree sunburn my back feels like a 2nd or even 3rd degree burn even though it doesn’t show. By mid afternoon on Tuesday I was in so much pain and screaming / crying in agony that my wife had no choice but to drive me to the ER. 2 days later I am pain free and peeling like a banana.

For a few days I needed a back scratch, it was the only thing that felt like it could relieve the burning sensation I had. (Warning: cheesy metaphor ahead) Isn’t that how life goes sometimes? We have a burning need in our life for someone to scratch our backs? I was hurting and I needed someone to make my back feel better. But aren’t there times when we are hurting on the inside and we long to hear the words of encouragement from another? Times when we feel a deep need to be noticed, recognized or encouraged. We all need our back scratched from time to time by other people.

The problem with that is most of the time scratching our backs is not what we really need. I needed pain medication, lotion and to stay away from the heat for my back to heal. But scratching my back felt better. But it wasn’t what I really needed. Most of us if we got really honest with ourselves we would admit that the emotional scars, relational wounds and past hurts feel better when someone soothes our ears with words we want to hear, not words we need to hear.

Right now I really want someone to scratch my back, but that is not what I really need.

Right now do you have people scratching your back? Or telling you the truth?

Old Time Memory

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Personal | Leave a comment

Singer and songwriter Josh Kelley has a song called “Old Time Memory” and a portion of the lyrics are as follows:

“Cuz I belong to the best of you
And you belong to the things I do
Well this song is how i’ll remember you
Cuz I can tell you what its like to be gone
Cuz I can tell you what its like to be gone
You’re an old time memory”

I love my family and miss them often. Separated by my own choices and thousands of miles often makes life a little bit lonelier than I would like.  Just like any one does I shared a tremendous amount of memories with my family growing up. I have a lot of fond memories in Michigan from my childhood.

There are times when I wish I could take my wife back in time and experience some events or places with her, but I really don’t see that happening any time soon. But we can do the next best thing: create new memories and move from old to new. This week my wife and I will be flying back to Michigan for my cousin Matt Zimmerman’s wedding but right when we get in town we are going to sneak away with my brother and his wife and my mom to create some new memories.

My favorite old time memories from Michigan include shoreline bike rides, ferry rides to Mackinac, the bridge walk and trips to Tahquamenon Falls. Hopefully we will be able to experience all of these things in new ways this coming week. I am so ready for a vacation. I am so ready to experience some new memories with my wife and my family, because I can tell you what its like to be gone.

What about you? What are some of your favorite childhood memories?

Part 3 – Church Media Design TV

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Spiritual | 2 Comments

On the shores of Lake Michigan in there is a reasonable sized community of 12,000 people nestled in the sand dunes a couple hours north of Chicago. Grand Haven Michigan is called Coast Guard City USA because it is home to the United States Coast Guard Festival. It is a great place to live and if you want to buy some real estate, feel free to contact my mom. Grand Haven is also home to something that might be flying under your radar: Church Media Design TV.

Church Media Design or CMDTV was started just over a year ago by innovator and church tech junkie Brad Zimmerman. Yes that is my brother and yes he is a genius. No I am not biased. Truth be told – over the years my brother and I have not always seen eye to eye. He was the punk little brother and I was the jerk older brother. We fought often. But during his years at Full Sail we spent time reconnecting and growing as brothers. Something amazing happened during those years, we went from hating each other to be being best friends. Something else amazing happened, my brother blossomed into an amazing designer and creative genius.

After a few years of only sharing his talents with his church he came up with the idea to start a web-based television show that basically gives viewers “tips, tricks & how-tos.” Brad is basically taking his education and gifting it to everyone for free! Brad’s heart is huge for churches. He is passionate about helping to equip churches to produce great media that appeals to attendees and guests. Brad’s passion about what he does and it shows in every episode.

Brad with the help of Adam Foster produce weekly episodes that can help take your ministry, organization or church to the next level in media content. If anything I would recommend watching some of the episodes for the all the FREE stuff that my brother gives away. With partners like Collide Magazine, Worship House Media, and The Ooze Tv Brad is going to get you discounts and freebies you can not get anywhere else.

If you have not watched an episode I would highly recommend you do. NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE! The thing about Brad’s show that caught me off guard is that it was designed to be of use to church “techies” but in fact it is a great resource for anyone. Brad has episodes on simple things like episode 36: “Saving YouTube” and Episode 46: “Photoshop Brush Viewer” among other ones that are extremely helpful to anyone who is just starting out on the media/graphic design/website design journey. There are plenty of helpful episodes on ProPresenter, After Effects and other programs. Brad has something for everyone, so make sure to stop by and check out the site. A new episode posts every Monday.

If you are interested in seeing Brad speak in person he will be doing a breakout at the Echo Conference in Dallas July 29-31.

Uncensored Grace

Posted on by Benji Zimmerman Posted in Personal | Leave a comment

When I was growing up I spent a lot of time in a small Reformed Christian Church in Grand Haven Michigan. It was an old church but it was filled with a lots of good memories. However, there were many things that were never mentioned when I was growing up, grace was one of them.

Flash forward to the summer of 2007. I started working at Central Christian Church and was wrapped into a world of love and grace I had never experienced before. I have been all over the world doing missions, working for non-profits and working for worthy causes, but never before have I seen this level of grace and compassion towards the broken and brokenhearted.

I find it interesting that the word Grace is used ( in the NIV) . . .
11 times in the Old Testament
116 times in the New Testament
but only 2 times in the Gospels: Luke 2:40 and the first chapter of John.

Luke 2:40 says “And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.” This verse is about Jesus. The grace of God was upon him. Over and over in the book of Acts the same phrase is used, the grace of God.

My parents did a tremendous job of raising me, but one thing my church failed to teach me was grace. I am so grateful to have a place like Central so I can learn more about what it really means to show the grace of God.

Why is this so important?

Author Gordon MacDonald hits the nail on the head in his book, Rebuilding Your Broken World, “Broken-world experiences happen to almost all of us. . . Ultimately, rebuilding broken worlds can never happen alone. It is a team effort, and it has to be accomplished in concert with those who can give grace and affirm progress.”

Amen.
