What If Your Church Didn’t Exist Anymore?

What if your church didn’t exist anymore?
Would anyone notice?
One of my favorite pastors, Steve Deur, asks this question often of his church on the shores of Lake Michigan and it resonates with me as I visit other churches and think about my own. It is a hard question to ask yourself if you are a pastor or church staff member. But these types of questions must be asked.
Last night I attended a free indie garage band concert at a locals casino here in Vegas. My wife’s brother was playing with his band and it was a lot of fun to see him perform live because it has been almost two years since I saw his last show. The opening band was horrible and the last band was a little too punk for my liking but all in all it was a fun event. While attending I could not get out of my head the fact that the demographic of people in attendance were the type of grunge, punk and rock style people that the church spends very little time interacting with and reaching out too.
In a lunch meeting last week with Vince Antonucci I asked him how Forefront was doing since he left. I was curious to know if the numbers had dipped since his departure. His response, “The numbers didn’t change much. The type of people we were reaching in Virginia had never been to church before. They wouldn’t know where else to go.” WOW. Vince has got it. If Forefront closed its doors Virginia Beach would notice. That is why I know The Verve will be a huge success even if only has a few hundred people attending, because it will be reaching people who have never been to church before.
But what about your church? Are you reaching the lost, the broken and the hurting?
My prayer is that you and your church are reaching out to the people that need to hear the good news of Jesus rather than trading attendees with the other churches in your town.
